Guide to what's to be found in Ciao Famiglia

by Adrian Fletcher (afletch at paradoxplace dot com)

This web-site is written by Adrian Fletcher and is about nine-ish generations of his direct ancestors.  Since the site was launched in mid 2009 it has grown, in the way of web-sites, much larger than expected and therefore become more challenging to navigate and write - no disciplined nomenclature, data bases etc here!!  The purpose of this short guide is to outline (with links) what is in the site to help users find what they want .  Many documents are linked to more than one page - maybe a family tree, photo or narrative page etc - and sheer size means that not all pages can be identified / updated as soon as new information is added - so it's a good idea to have fun hunting around.  Also, please let me know if links don't work or lead to odd places!

The best place to start is with the Recent Ancestors of Angela Williams (Fletcher) & Adrian Fletcher page

This identifies (with photos and links) Adrian and Angela's parents, grand-parents and great-grand-parents,

and includes lots of facts about their lives.

A good way of getting an overview is this family tree going back 7 generations

and coloured to show where everyone lived, which can be viewed here

Underpinning the Recent Ancestors chart are four charts, one for each pair of great-grandparents, showing further generations of direct ancestors for:

Having got much of the name / date / place data together the really interesting bit of writing illustrated stories of particular lives, geographic areas and times is underway.  The stories already done include:

The James Cooper Stewart Story - Scottish house painter's son sails to Australia and rises to be Mayor of Melbourne

WW I  Lt Col Jimmy Sproule, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 131 Field Ambulance and the 38th (Welsh) Division in the Battlefields of Belgium and the Somme

Jimmy S looking awkward with the Prince of Wales

Chateau Longeau, Amiens - 7 February 1919

The Seward Yeoman Tenant Farmers of 1000 acres in Weston (Hampshire), and memorials to three generations in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Buriton

Buriton, Hampshire

Tregony

TREGONY & BODMIN (CORNWALL)

Nicholas Middlecoat Jnr (1752 - 1844 (92))

my 4 x Grt grandfather came from Tregony in Cornwall.  Father of 13, innkeeper ("Queens Head Inn" Tregony, sadly no longer there), political agent and fixer, convicted electoral briber, writer and writee, bankrupt ... we are finding out more about this interesting Cornish rogue (who lived to the age of 92!) and his ancestors and associates.

One of Nick's wife's ancestors was Dr George de Mountfryart (1652 - 1717 (65)), several times Mayor of Bodmin around 1700.

Sproules and Fletchers in Egypt - 1935-1944

Jimmmy Sproule served as a senior RAMC / General Staff Officer in Cairo, Egypt from November 1935 to January 1942, with a home leave in August / September 1937 and a more curtailed leave in summer 1939 (WWII was declared on 3rd September 1939).

He was joined for all this time by his wife Clare, and for much of it by daughter Peggy.  Son Brian came out for some school holidays.

Clare and Peggy took all the opportunities available to travel widely and take photographs, and we will be taking the opportunity to run some of them in Ciaofamiglia.

Sailing to New Countries (and other family boat tales)  1710 - 1972

The Marco Polo, in which James Stewart sailed to Melbourne in 1857 - in 1885 he was elected Mayor of Melbourne.

To keep things manageable, the names in Ciao Famiglia are restricted mostly to direct ancestors.  They are taken from a much larger data-base of families built up by Adrian Fletcher and maintained via a "Roots Magic" family tree program.  Some descendant charts generated by this program are included in the this site's data, and others can be produced on request if any family researcher has a particular interest.
